There
is a lot going on in this month of October. One big thing that is going on this
month is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM). NBCAM is an organization that
helps promote awareness, spread knowledge, and provide great service about this
type of cancer. This organization has been around for over 25 years, they have
gone a long way of being successful with helping women improve their breast
health and treating former patients. According to cancer.org, Breast cancer is a
malignant tumor that starts in the cells of the breast that are able to spread
to different tissues of the body.” In my biology class, I just learned about
what cancer
is and whether it can be inherited or not. About 90% of cancers are newly
acquired from our environment, such as smoking or being in an environment with
dangerous chemicals. The other 10% is inherited. Without a doubt, everyone and
anyone are prone to getting cancer. There are many types of cancer that people
can acquire. If you would like to read more about cancer or learn about the
different types, you can go to www.cancer.org.
Another current issue happening this month is Proposition
37. You may wonder how this proposition may have an effect in the medical
field, and it actually has a lot to do with your health. As a student who is
trying to pursue a career in naturopathic medicine, having the right to know
what companies put in our food, whether if it is genetically modified or if companies put certain ingredients that would affect our health. People who are for this proposition say “Consumers who
believe in the harmful
effects of GMOs want to make sure companies are not sneaking them (GMO) into our foods. Some concerned mothers don’t want these products anywhere near
their kids.” With every pro about something, there is always a con. People who
oppose to this proposition say that the reason they do not want this
proposition to pass is because there would be an increase of pay when grocery shopping.
Dansereau’s has great evidence with why people should vote for proposition 37.
“According to No on 37: Stop the Deceptive Food-Labeling Scheme, Prop. 37 would
cost families an extra $400 per year in groceries.” I believe that this reason
for opposing this law is not much an effect to how our health will be in the
long run. She lastly makes a great point to finding about more information
about proposition 37 by looking into the money backing each side with who
financially supports or opposes this proposition.
Overall, i know those are only a couple of issues happening this month, but it is always good to be knowledgeable about what is happening in your field of study. being aware with what is going on in your field will only benefit you with what you may have to face in the future.

With the election coming up it is nice to see you find a proposition that is connected to holistic alternatives. I was unaware about Proposition 37 but after reading the article, it seems like a big deal to me. I would like to know if my food is genetically modified and when I have kids I would not want them to eat these products. I feel like we have the right to know what is going on with my food. I think it is interesting that people make the argument to vote no because families will spend 400 dollars more a year. Honestly 30 dollars or so a month on groceries does not seem like that big of a deal when you think of about the long-term effects that come with some of the food we eat now. After reading this, I am not sure if you really gave your stand? I am curious to know what your position is on this issue.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I was not truly done with my blog, and still have a bit of editing to do... But what I have to say about prop 37 is that it may seem like we'll spending more on groceries because of the food labeling. Just like you have said, $400 is not that much more to spend in a year, but that may just be me being bias. I have read in a couple articles that they actually label foods in Europe, and it's funny to see that America has huge health issues while Europe has significantly less health issues. It might be the fact that people are allergic to things that they never knew they were allergic to. What if one day you eat some chicken and rice and all of a sudden had an allergic reaction? Do you think it is because you are allergic to the type of chicken you bought? Or do you think that all chicken manufacturers put something in their chicken that you will never know about? Also, some food companies pay to label their food as "natural" or "organic", but we have to be skeptical whether these companies are truly labeling their food. Here are a couple of links if you are more curious about prop 37.

I am glad that there is a proposition on stopping food companies from hiding the fact that their products are genetically modified. I have taken so many classes that discuss this topic. It is really sad how a lot of our food is genetically modified, but it does not stop people from still buying the products maybe a big part of it is because they do not know it actually is inside of there food. It is interesting to see how you are applying this prop to holistic medicine because with this prop many companies might want to discontinue genetically modifying there food because if customers find out what is in it they probably will discontinue buying it. However, I think it is a little dumb for the government to want the people to live a healthier lifestyle, yet the food is going to be more expensive if it is healthier. That is the reason people eat unhealthy, because it is cheaper.
ReplyDeleteEven though I have very little knowledge about Cancer, I do agree that proposition 37 should be passed because we as a consumer suppose to have every right to know what we buy, eat ,or drink. Like what Anjelia said, even though there are some people who believe that this prop will make families spend $400 extra on their expenditures, but I believe it is worth it in long run to make sure that you do not consume any toxic and dangerous chemicals.
