Everyone struggles to figure out with what they want to do as a
career and have different ways of achieving it. For some, it is simple to see
where they want to go, but for others, it is a struggle. I lay right in between
the two paths because I know what to do as a career, but at the same time, I am
still figuring out how get to where I want to be without skipping any essential steps to
getting there. As of right now, I am attending San Francisco State University
trying to obtain a B.S. Degree in Biology with a concentration of Physiology
with a minor in Human Sexualities. What I plan to do after I get my B.S. Degree
is to take a year off school and reflect on what is the next step after college
life. When I do figure out the next steps, I plan to apply to UCSF, UC Davis,
or Touro University in order to pursue my career as a naturopathic doctor.
Another name for a Naturopathic doctor is a Holistic Doctor. These doctors use
alternative methods, such as natural herbs or nutrition, to enable people to
become whole within themselves. This link explains more about what a holistic
doctor is and more details about naturopath: http://www.umm.edu/altmed/articles/naturopathy-000356.htm
.
The reason why I am thinking about this path is because I have
seen many of my family members get prescribed medicine that makes them feel
weaker physically and mentally, and I feel that the doctors they are seeing are
in the medical field for the wrong reasons. I want to be that doctor who has an
influence in their life and makes sure that to not just be a doctor but someone
they can always rely on and trust. Sort of like what we think of a friend. If
being a doctor does not work out, I have two alternative careers that will
still let me have a career in the medical field. One alternative would be
involved in research about whether or not vaccinations and autism correlate
with each other. A majority of my life, I have helped my mother raise my older
brother. My mom strongly believes that the cause of his autism was from vaccine
shots he got when he was about 18 months; helping my mother find the answer to
why my brother has autism and whether his autism was caused by the vaccine or if
it was just a coincidence. If you would like to read more about if vaccines
cause autism, this link is about how vaccines do not cause autism: http://www.autismsciencefoundation.org/autismandvaccines.html
while this link is about how vaccines may cause autism: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/06/11/vaccines-autism-controversy-why_n_1586898.html
.
Lastly, my last alternative would be becoming a physical
therapist or anything to do with helping athletes. I was a former track athlete
and the number 1 singles tennis player during my high school days, and I
actually tore my lateral meniscus and suffered having shin splints. I went to
physical therapy clinics for my meniscus since I had to get arthroscopic knee
surgery. Whenever I was required to go to the physical therapy clinic, I never
felt that it benefited me, and if I were to ever become a physical therapist,
my goal is to make sure I help athletes like I was, get stronger so they are
able to play their sport.
For me, I never had really anyone to trust with my medical
needs; and my main goal for when I do pursue a career in the medical field is
to help people and make sure they know that their life is in the right hands.
Whether you see me in a hospital, in a research lab, or out on the field, in a physical
therapy building, you will definitely see me help one person at a time; and
that person someday, might be you.
The idea of being a holistic doctor seems to really hit home for you. The examples uses in your writing show that your experiences with your brother and as being an athlete have almost made you feel obligated to enter this profession. Being that becoming a holistic doctor is so personal to you, why do you feel the need to have these "back-up plans" in the event that it does not work out? If this is your passion you should make it your ultimate priority and avoid thinking about these alternatives that suggest possible failure in reaching your profession.
ReplyDeleteHi Anjelia, I am glad that you asked why I have "back- up" plans. I mean, it is always great to be motivated to have one goal and pursue it. At the same time, you never truly know what curve ball life throws at you. Just incase something happens that I am not able to pursue my dream in becoming a naturopathic doctor, I definitely want to make sure that I have something else in mind. It is kind of like with something that will change your life forever, you can't let it be an all or nothing situation, you have to make sure you are able to take advantage of your situation and make the best out of it.
DeleteHow you relate your brother's autism to the reason why you end up choosing what you want to be is very impressive. Many doctors these days do not even really care anymore about their patients. They seem to forget that doctor is a job that have a huge responsibility. People who chose to be a doctor or nurse today seems only tempted by the big money that they will get if they enter the medical world.
ReplyDeleteBrianto, that is exactly why I want to become a doctor. Before school started, I had to go to the hospital and I was talking to a doctor about the career path I was pursuing, and I was a bit discouraged at the fact he told me that being a doctor is not the best way to go. I mean, hearing an actual doctor say that working in the medical field is a bad choice is kind of bizarre! I honestly think he was just in the field just to make good money, because otherwise, I felt awkward talking to the doctor and I felt that he did not completely answer my questions of what was wrong with me.
DeleteNadia you're personal feelings towards doctors are the same as mine. I've struggled with breathing related problems my entire life, and no doctor has yet to understand why. They say I have asthma, so they give me a bunch of medication to take. Some of it works while others don't. The issue is I only get asthma in damp climates such as San Francisco and after spending enough time away from damp areas and into dry i don't have breathing problems. The frustrating part is that doctors don't want to understand what I've been telling them ever since I discovered this.
ReplyDeleteMark, you should read what I told Brianto. I have had that same issue with doctors never telling me the answers to what is actually wrong with me or if there was anything wrong in the first place. It is hard to trust doctors with your health issues if they do not seem to care about you. That's why when I become a doctor, I want to make sure that my interactions with patients are personal and that they are able to trust me. Did you ever find out if asthma was the actual answer to your breathing problems due to different climates?
DeleteI find your interest in using natural medicine so interesting. I find myself disliking going to the doctors a lot because all they do is prescribe medicine and medicine can usually cure stuff, but at the same time it causes other side effects as well. After reading about your decision of trying to apply holistic methods when you become a doctor, I thought about how could holistic medicine be applied to Optometry. I want to get into Optometry and since I do not like medicine, it made me think of how I would be able to have alternatives to medicine in the Optometry field.
ReplyDeleteRebecca, I definitely agree that it seems that everyone "dislikes" going to the doctors. Like I have mentioned in my blog post, it is sad to say that most doctors just keep prescribing drugs that do not even benefit the patient. It just makes them feel worse about themselves. I believe that the drugs made to make you feel "better" are made with things that our body is not accustomed to. With naturopathic medicine, I feel that it would be a better way of at least attempting to make the person feel better by using things our bodies are accustomed to. That would be interesting mixing the fields of optometry and naturopathy together. Since optometry has to do with our eyes, it would be difficult to cure certain eye disorders/ diseases, such as cataracts or glaucoma. What are your ideas about curing these kinds of diseases with naturopathic medicine?
