Everyone struggles to figure out with what they want to do as a
career and have different ways of achieving it. For some, it is simple to see
where they want to go, but for others, it is a struggle. I lay right in between
the two paths because I know what to do as a career, but at the same time, I am
still figuring out how get to where I want to be without skipping any essential steps to
getting there. As of right now, I am attending San Francisco State University
trying to obtain a B.S. Degree in Biology with a concentration of Physiology
with a minor in Human Sexualities. What I plan to do after I get my B.S. Degree
is to take a year off school and reflect on what is the next step after college
life. When I do figure out the next steps, I plan to apply to UCSF, UC Davis,
or Touro University in order to pursue my career as a naturopathic doctor.
Another name for a Naturopathic doctor is a Holistic Doctor. These doctors use
alternative methods, such as natural herbs or nutrition, to enable people to
become whole within themselves. This link explains more about what a holistic
doctor is and more details about naturopath: http://www.umm.edu/altmed/articles/naturopathy-000356.htm
.
The reason why I am thinking about this path is because I have
seen many of my family members get prescribed medicine that makes them feel
weaker physically and mentally, and I feel that the doctors they are seeing are
in the medical field for the wrong reasons. I want to be that doctor who has an
influence in their life and makes sure that to not just be a doctor but someone
they can always rely on and trust. Sort of like what we think of a friend. If
being a doctor does not work out, I have two alternative careers that will
still let me have a career in the medical field. One alternative would be
involved in research about whether or not vaccinations and autism correlate
with each other. A majority of my life, I have helped my mother raise my older
brother. My mom strongly believes that the cause of his autism was from vaccine
shots he got when he was about 18 months; helping my mother find the answer to
why my brother has autism and whether his autism was caused by the vaccine or if
it was just a coincidence. If you would like to read more about if vaccines
cause autism, this link is about how vaccines do not cause autism: http://www.autismsciencefoundation.org/autismandvaccines.html
while this link is about how vaccines may cause autism: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/06/11/vaccines-autism-controversy-why_n_1586898.html
.
Lastly, my last alternative would be becoming a physical
therapist or anything to do with helping athletes. I was a former track athlete
and the number 1 singles tennis player during my high school days, and I
actually tore my lateral meniscus and suffered having shin splints. I went to
physical therapy clinics for my meniscus since I had to get arthroscopic knee
surgery. Whenever I was required to go to the physical therapy clinic, I never
felt that it benefited me, and if I were to ever become a physical therapist,
my goal is to make sure I help athletes like I was, get stronger so they are
able to play their sport.
For me, I never had really anyone to trust with my medical
needs; and my main goal for when I do pursue a career in the medical field is
to help people and make sure they know that their life is in the right hands.
Whether you see me in a hospital, in a research lab, or out on the field, in a physical
therapy building, you will definitely see me help one person at a time; and
that person someday, might be you.
